In 2019, our 1% for the Planet donation was beneficial to the Kalaweit Association to protect the Sumatra Forest in Indonesia. Their project consists in purchasing parcels of forest and transforming them into reserves, thus protecting wildlife.
Indonesia is one of the countries most affected by deforestation due to the massive production of palm oil. National parks and state reserves are not immune to deforestation. The Kalaweit Association works to safeguard gibbons and siamangs and their habitat. Since 2011, to protect the forest, Kalaweit has purchased plots of forest and converted them into private reserves. In Sumatra, she created the Supayang Reserve, where many species live, including gibbons and siamangs. The objective is to purchase additional plots of forest (100 hectares), which are located around the reserve to gradually expand its total area. The association then oversees the reserve. The reserve is growing in size
