Monitor the quality of your environment
with the bee !

Foraging from flower to flower in natural environments as well as urban areas, honey bees are the true sentinels our environment's quality. Every day, thousands of foragers from a single colony are in contact with:
Through this daily activity, honey bees bioaccumulate all kinds of molecules and particles, on the surface of their bodies or internally, both from the atmosphere and the environment. The analysis of the compounds accumulated allows to assess the level of the overall environmental contamination in the foraging area (up to 3km around the hives).

This biomonitoring method, developed by APILAB, has been standardized since 2017: AFNOR XP X43-909 standard "Active biomonitoring of the environment using the honeybee" . The interpretation of the values is also standardized, since 2020: AFNOR XP X43-910 standard "Guidelines for the establishment of benchmark values in air biomonitoring".

What indicators can you obtain ?

We perform the following environmental contamination analyses :
- trace metals (TMEs),
- combustion residues (PAHs),
- pesticides,
- dioxins/furans,
- PCBs, fine particles
This service, named APIDIAG®, can be complementary to other biomonitoring campaigns (lichens, mosses).
The method can be used in the framework of regulatory monitoring for ICPE / SEVESO companies:
- for the conduct of studies of areas. (INERIS)
- for air monitoring around classified installations. (INERIS)
- for the evaluation of the state of the environment and the sanitary risks. (INERIS)

APIDIAG® will allow you to obtain reliable and accessible indicators of the global quality of your environment and to implement improvement and awareness actions for your stakeholders. Thus, these indicators can be used to obtain your certifications (ISO14001; HVE; organic for example) or labels (BeeFriendly; companies committed to nature - act4nature of the French Office for Biodiversity).
If we take account the fact that a hive coutain on average around 40.000 bees,
and that a quarter of these are foragers who each day "visit" a thousand flowers each,
we can estimate that a colony of bees carries out 10 million micro-samples daily.
